Top 5 Foods To Eat In Summer, And WHY!

The first of December is just 2 days away, which means Summer will be well and truly upon us.

I think you will all agree when I say that the different seasons call for different foods. In Winter you’re not going to want to eat the same things as you do in Summer (for the most part). Just like a steaming pile of soup is not really going to ‘call your name’ in the midst of a heat wave.

SO, I have compiled a list of my top 5 picks for summer foods, not just for their taste and aesthetic, but I will tell you WHY they are good for you in the Summer months.

1. Watermelon

Let me guess, you’re all thinking, ‘well, obviously’ and you’d be correct, but do you know WHY you are correct, apart from the summery aesthetic a Watermelon holds?

Well, that’s okay. I’m going to tell you.

Watermelons are extremely high in water content. This means that while you’re starving and trying to eat as much as possible, you’re actually doing yourself a favour and keeping hydrated at the same time.

As well as this little nugget of knowledge, Watermelons contain something called Lycopene. What this does is it protects your skin cells from sun damage to the best of its ability. You can’t say that’s not a handy food to have in the hottest season. Keeps you hydrated, and helps protect against the sun. Delicious.

2. Oranges

Another of the obvious summer food choices but wait, there’s more!

Did you know that you lose a lot of potassium through your sweat? And did you know that loss of potassium can contribute to the risk of muscle cramps? Not a great statistic to be aware of when all you want to do is jump in a cold body of water to wash off the heat.

Oranges will stock you back up on potassium, and keep those muscle cramps at bay. They are also made up mostly of water, so they’re another food that will keep you hydrated. What little super hero’s you are, Oranges!

3. Celery/Fennel

I have to admit, I’m not the biggest fan of either of these guys, but the good news is, is that when you juice them with other, better tasting lovelies, you wont even know they’re there!

The good thing about these not-so-great-tasting veggies is that they actually help with puffiness and bloating. They allow you to loose excess water weight without becoming dehydrated, which is always nice in the summer, when we want to feel confident in our bathers. This works by stimulating the Kidney’s, through them, waste is flushed along with extra fluids, causing a positive effect all round. So when you’re having your morning juice, throw in some of these guys and reap the benefits.

4. Strawberries/Blueberries

These guys are not only more affordable in the hotter months but are also the perfect snack when chilled, and what’s better is they are more beneficial for us then we knew. (Yay)

These berries are filled with something called Flavonoids. What Flavonoids do, in short, is help our immune system defend against diseases. Always a plus.

They also increase blood flow to the skin and decrease sensitivity to light, so that mean we will look glowier and feel better and get sick less. You are WELCOME!

5. Avocado’s

This one is a throw in because I really do love Avocado’s all year round, but especially in the summer. On a piece of toast, with corn chips in guacamole form, you cannot beat it.

Along with being super tasty and just a food that makes me happy, they’re also good for your heart, and a happy heart is always a good thing to have. They’re full of all the good fats and are a classic summer food, you can’t go wrong with an Avo.
